Camera Recalls / Service Notices (All Brands)

Postby Marty » Sun Jul 19, 2009 8:48 am

I've posted info on recalls/services notices before, but they are fairly rare so it might make sense to just have one thread to list repair issues info for all brands of cameras.

Canon has had a couple of service notices in the past few months, so I guess it's Nikon's turn. ;)

The Nikon D5000 (Nikon's newest DSLR), is experiencing intermittent failure when powering up. If you, or someone you know owns a Nikon D5000, follow the link below to view the Service Advisory associated with this model. It will tell you how to determine if your camera is affected (a serial number look-up tool will be available on the page beginning July 23, 2009). If your camera is affected, Nikon will repair it at no charge for you and they will also pay for the shipping.

Canon A85

Canon A85

I found out a couple of months ago that Canon will replace the LCD on any A85 style camera. Not sure what all models this includes, but it also included an A75. I like Canon's repair dept. I sent in 20 of these cameras and they not only repaired the defective part, they fixed all kinds of other things...NO CHARGE!!!

There is a ghosting issue using certain settings with the new Canon 7D. An explanation and firmware upgrade is available to remedy this issue by following this link:

EDIT: Just an FYI - I agree with Drew's opinion with the Canon service department. I bought a used Canon lens that needed to have the filter thread ring replaced. I sent it in and approved of the estimate they gave me. When I got my lens back, there was a note that when testing it they thought it wasn't zooming smoothly enough, so they also replaced a couple parts on the zoom mechanism at no extra charge. Even with the cost of repairs, the lens still cost hundreds less than a new one and is now in perfect condition.
