I really think you should get the D90. It is a LOT better camera. The D5k has the awesome fully articulating screen...but other than that, the D90 is a much more robust camera. The dual control wheels along is KEY for me. Also, the ability to use a MUCH, MUCH larger variety of lenses is so important. In fact, it is the reason to stay with Nikon if you ask me. For example with Nikon you can use an older, AIS MF lens...works perfect on the D90...allowing full control of the aperture.

I still love my D3 and D700 for the FX, but the D90 is actually my most often used camera right now.

Drew I'm on board with you! I went and compared both cameras side by side and I favored toward the D90! I just want to make sure I make the right investment that's a lot of money to spend and I want to get the best for what I spend!

It was kinda hard to go to Sandy Puc Family Tour and see nothing but Canon. So many more people use Canon over Nikon and its all so confusing! But I think I will be faithful to my Nikon and stick with it.

Thanks for your input! Now I gotta get saving! Best Buy has the D90 kit with a 70-300mm VR and 18-105mm lens and backpack for around $1689.00!

I think if you shoot ANYTHING professionally, then you can't look at this as an expense. If you shoot any weddings, I would SERIOUSLY consider the D3 ...and make it worth while. Only the D3 has a dual card slot so that you are shooting to two memory cards at the same time. No worries if you are shooting a portrait that can be redone...but for something that can't be easily repeated, I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less. I am heading out to a bridal right now (brr!) and just switch my memory card config over to "backup" allowing me to be certain that I get the images. After, I shoot, I take one of the memory cards out and put it in a safe place separate from the camera in case the camera were to be stolen, etc. until I can get the images backed up to external storage.

The D90 is a fine camera...and the 18-105 adequate. With it being at best buy, you ought to be able to put it on a 18 month interest free plan pretty easy.

I agree, I think the D90 is a better camera. I have the D80 and my mom recently got the D5000. I played with her camera a little, mine will focus faster. The dials of the D90 are similar to the D80, to me they are more user friendly and you wont drain your battery by having to use your LCD screen to change settings.
Also, I would investigate the kit lenses.. If I had it to do again, I would buy the body and lens separate.
We all dream of the D3, but for most of us thats a big stretch!

I didn't realize you didn't do weddings. I knew you did portraits and assumed events as well.

I meant no disrespect and I didn't mean for it to come off quite like it sounded as some lesson about it being an investment. It is just that having run two businesses (and maintained a rent house), I've always tried to spare no expense...especially in something that could be a tax deduction. I say "tried" because there are plenty of times I have cut corners...and paid the price, etc. I am not saying that any camera or lens is cutting corners as I have shopped from pawn shops and ebay for the best of the bargains. I once sold a 80-200/2.8 lens to buy a 70-300/5.6 just to recoup some money spent on the D100 I had just bought. I knew I was probably making a mistake...but after I took a few pictures, I could have cried of how bad of mistake I made.

I have owned just about every type of Nikon body there is...and there is just a huge difference between shooting with a D40/50/60 and a D70/80/90, D100/200/300/700 or a D2/3, etc. I know the saying that the camera doesn't make the photographer, but it does help. I sold my D100, downgrading to a D70...justifying that I could get two D70s for the price of one D100. After just a couple of months, I realized I had mead a terrible mistake...and sold them as quickly as I could upgrading to more substantial cameras.

I can shoot plenty good pictures with my D40, but I get better pictures with the other cameras. Ironically, for recreational shooting the D90 is the best camera. I love it's program exposure modes, such as the AE No Flash setting. Or the Night Time Portrait Mode. These modes prove useful even in a professional capacity, but despite the D90's definite improvement in ISO over the D80 and other lower end cameras and even slight improvement over the D300, the low light capability of the D700/D3 is nothing short of stunning.

All I meant to say initially was that as a business expense, it could be deducted. My D3 has more than paid for itself. But more important than that, I feel more comfortable in shooting with it. I know this isn't Houston, but a photographer friend of mine in Houston said clients will call up asking what camera they are using as a means to qualify who they hire. I haven't had anybody ask me what exactly what camera I am using, but I have used it as a selling point in conversations...and promoted the fact that I am using state of the art equipment, etc. in advertisements and i think it has certainly helped me get jobs I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

But I know where you are coming from...you have to have the money to spend it. I do know that buying local at places like Best Buy with 18 month interest free plans (as long as you pay it off in 18 months) makes buying lots of goodies almost too easy.

Oh my I know you meant no disrespect at all! I didn't take it that way! I love your input and you know what your doing and when you tell me something I really ponder on it~ Too many times Ive went and bought something and like you could of kicked myself because I went cheaper I lost in the long run! So this time I want to make sure I get the right camera for what I do. Most of my clients are infants, children and family's. I have done weddings maybe average 1 a year? I just dont really care for them! In the past 8 years Ive been doing photography I think Ive done 13 or so. Its not bad just a lot of work!!! Oh and most of them has been people I know that asked me to do their weddings. I had asked you in the past about going with you when you do a wedding so I could see how a real pro does it!!!
Thank you so much for your input!

Im sorry If I sounded like I was upset with because in no way was I!

I bought a D90 back before Christmas and I am very impressed with it. Of course, it is still much smarter than I am, but I am learning! Can't compare it with the higher end models since I haven't used any of those, but I'm very pleased with this one. Mary

Hey Mary...just keep it off the Pickle Mode...unless you are in a pickle...and you will master the camera in no time!
