Official Club 6 Entries

Postby Drew Loker » Sat Sep 19, 2009 8:14 am

Let me be the first to post an entry for Club 6. And, as the KING of Club 6, I gotta tell you, I have PLENTY of pictures to fill in here.

Joe Meet Joe.jpg
One of my first Club 6 winners!

In case you aren't sure what exactly it takes to be in this club, all you have to do is enter the monthly BCC contest (or GSCCC) and have a print score the absolute lowest possible score. Whoo Hoo!!!

So, how is this possible. Well, let me explain the judging system.

There are three judges. A picture is presented. Each judge has a controller to enter their score. Technically, the scores should be on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the worst. But, as a courtesy, the judges are asked not to enter a 1 for an image. So, this means the total possible score from all three judges is between 6 and 15.

So basically, it means that all three judges agreed that an image was not worth more than the lowest possible score. What a great feeling! But, good news, you now are a member of Club 6! Congratulations!!! 6 is the new 15...and you deserve a round of applause!

And, what is really an even better feeling is when two or more of your images in a single month score 6. What a rush!!! In fact, one month, I actually came 1 pt away from a full sweep in the Projected Category with two entries receiving a 6 and my final entry receiving a 7. Never have I been so disappointed that i didn't actually get a 6. I was one (1) point from forever eternalizing a perfect score of 3 6s for a combined score of 18 points! WOW!! That REALLY would have been a special distinction.

But what can I say? I have the most Club 6 winners because I have entered more than anybody else (at least in the past 6 years). I'll eventually post some more.

The KEY is to enter...you enter to win...and with Club 6, you enter to loose...both can be rewarding.

If you enter, and one of your images receives the ultimate distinction of receive the LOWEST possible score, post it here...lest it disappear into obscurity.

I will get this elite Club going with one of my first Club 6 winners. I am not sure this is THE first, but one of them. And one of the shocking ones. I am not suggesting any of these are good images. But, when you shoot as much as I do (10's of thousands of pictures a year), and you cull down your photos to just three per category per month, thinking they are pretty much the best of your best, and you get a 6...well, it can be a little shocking.

And, for the record, I don't always enter an image I think will win, sometimes it is just for humor, or because I want to show something I have shot.

Competition is not just about winning. If you enter solely to win, you will be very likely, very quickly disappointed and quit entering. But don't. Entering the competitions presents me with the opportunity to cull through literally thousands of photos, forcing me to pick the best ones (at least to me) and preparing them for contest, tweaking the files, printing and prepping them for display. Because of the monthly contest, I have finalized dozens of images that would have disappeared into folds of time.

Competitions are also a reason to shoot. There are lots of time I will shoot something just because I think it will be cool to enter in the BCC monthly contest...and this is a good thing. So, regardless of how an image does in contest, there are many benefits to entering the contest each and every month. And who knows...you too may have an image do so poorly that you get to enter it here, in this forum as our latest Club 6 winner!

No, Marty, you got it all wrong...t o get the lowest score possible, it had to have been the best at least at one thing.

I mean, I am not trying to discourage judges from giving out a 2. Although it is true that the judges (historically) give more 6s than 15s, if a picture sucks, let it go down in flames royally! And a 6 is the way to do it! Then it can shine as the BEST...of the worst.

So you see Marty, you picture wasn't good enough to be the best of the worst. Your images was just above the best of the worst, which means it was actually worse than if you had gotten a 6. It actually failed at accomplishing anything! LOL!

Well James, if you REALLY want your picture to win the prestigious distinction of this special club, ignore the sizing requirements so your image displays poorly. That will definitely do the trick.

Oh, and here are a couple more...the latest ones from the infamous month where ALL of the photos submitted were subpar!

1000 Points of Light_4051.JPG

I really liked this one...because, well, I like special effects. The scene itself was pretty cool with out the special effect applied. This is shot downtown Beaumont with a sidewalk of trees lite up. With the camera on a tripod, I zoomed during the exposure. I shots lot of different pictures, and picked this one as the best. Maybe it need Santa Clause at the end of the tunnel swooping in his reindeer to score more points!

Ready to Pick_3021.JPG

And, what can I say, I really liked this image, or I wouldn't have picked it over the other several thousands images I look through when picking one for contest night. I guess I was partial this image because I knew what i did to take the images. Tripod mounted, 70-200/2.8 wtih Canon 500d and extension tube (for the REALLY high magnification), with an umbrella over my head to diffuse the sunlight. It was a quite a scene as I was having to hold my umbrella with my neck so that I could keep my hands free to control the camera.

Cheers!

Drew, in my book, none of those pictures are 6's or anything close. I submit that perhaps the judges were just having a bad day and misjudged. They're only human after all. I agree that it's good to be the baddest of bad, but I know these don't qualify. They are good shots and you know it too. I on the other hand do have some excellent examples of what a 6 should represent. I'll get them posted. I also agree that getting a 7 is a lot like getting a C+ or a B-. Might as well go down in a blaze of glory! CLUB SIX ROCKS! I'd love to see the T-shirt graphics  JOY P

Thanks for the sentiments above.

As far as your tower shot, yeah, I did feel bad for you when it scored a 6. I thought it was better than that...good color, leading lines. I do think the cars in front were deal killers and lacked a real strong center of interest. It was a tough shot to capture for sure.

Ok, it has been a while since I posted some Club 6 winners...but that is certainly not because I didn't have any winners.

So, for your ammuzement...one of my most recent Club 6 entries...with Karaoke Duo.

DC7_2988.JPG

The funny part about this picture is that I forgot that I entered this image the year before...and it didn't do well the year before either. But I really like the image. I think it is a great portrait. It was real...not staged...and it really captured this sweet couple singing together. A portrait photographer, I am not. My total score for the Portrait Comp month was 49 (out of 90)...so...I fail. I wish I could show you the one that scored a 7...but its not good enough for this thread.

And, I have been working on my Picture Tracker...a spreadsheet I use to track what images have been entered in what contests. Well, I just ran across one of my first ever 6 scores. I think it was at the GSCC level...not sure what it scored at the local BCC level. So, anyway, here it is for your additional amusement in all of its glory of 6 wonderful points!
